GroenLinks/PvdA largest after EU elections

GroenLinks-PvdA emerges victorious from the ballot box battle for the European elections. According to the latest forecasts, the collaborating faction of GroenLinks and PvdA will become the largest Dutch delegation in the European Parliament.

According to the latest forecasts, the party combination will have 8 seats, one seat less than in the previous European elections in 2019. The extreme right-wing PVV will also have 8 seats. The statistical margin per party is plus or minus 1 seat, so that the actual result (Sunday evening or Monday morning) will be decisive.

Most EU countries hold elections on Sunday. National or regional elections are also on a Sunday in most European countries. The Netherlands has a tradition of voting on working days.

The forecast of the results in the Netherlands for the European elections, in which GroenLinks-PvdA appears to be the largest party, shows that the PVV advance in November last year is still a one-off. The Netherlands then made a jerk to the right.

The PVV's gains have not gone unnoticed abroad. There the result is called 'surprising' and it also portends a European move to the right.

“Right-wing and radical right parties are expected to make significant electoral gains in many of the 27 EU member states, and the preliminary results in the Netherlands appear to be a harbinger of this,” writes the BBC.

But the British broadcaster also sees that Geert Wilders' PVV has not been able to repeat its national advance. Left-wing and center parties elsewhere in the EU countries will take heart from the result in the Netherlands.
