The milk price fell further in July in the EU region, but the rate of decline is slowing down. In July, the average price in the EU was 44.12 cents per kilo, one percent less than the previous month.
According to EU statistics, the average milk price in the EU countries has decreased every month so far this year. Before that, it had time to rise for 23 months in a row. In Finland the price was 51.60 cents.
The price seems to be stabilizing in the major dairy countries of Europe. In the Netherlands, the price has been 43.25 cents for three months. In Ireland, the price decrease has slowed down and the price is around 39 cents. The decline has also calmed down in Denmark and Germany and the price has been around 42 cents per kilo for a few months now.
In December the price in the Netherlands and Denmark was still above 60 cents and in Ireland even almost 70 cents per kilo. Compared to this, the price in Finland has remained very stable. Since December, the domestic average price has fallen by about four cents. Prices vary from dairy to dairy.
The reason for the drop in producer prices for milk can be found in the prices of all dairy products. They are all cheaper now than a year ago.
The price of butter in the EU area averaged 4.58 euros per kilo at the beginning of August. A year ago, in August, according to EU statistics, the price was more than seven euros.
The price of skimmed milk powder has fallen by 1.45 euros to 2.31 euros per kilo in one year. The price of whole milk powder fell by 1.49 euros to 3.41 euros per kilo.
Of the cheeses, cheddar and edam have become more than a euro per kilo cheaper. Emmentaler is an exception, the price has risen by 12 cents in one year to 6.09 euros per kilo.
