71-year-old Slovak writer Juraj Cintula, who is in prison for the attack on Prime Minister Robert Fico, says his act was against the decision to cut off Slovak aid to Ukraine.
He also told investigators that no one else was aware of his plans to attack the prime minister. The Slovak government has indicated several times that it believes the assassination attempt was part of a larger plot, writes Bloomberg news agency.
Court documents further show that Cintula mainly refers to the decision of the Slovak government to stop military aid to Ukraine, which was the direct reason for his act.
Cintula calls the policy of the nationalist-backed government of Slovak Prime Minister Fico 'treacherous towards the EU'. Furthermore, the 71-year-old claimed during interrogations that he did not intend to kill Fico, but only to “damage his health,” he explained.
Slovakia, a member of the EU, has become more nationalistic and pro-Russian now that Fico has been in power for several months. Since the assassination, other members of the government have blamed the opposition and the media. They state that they are responsible for the radicalization of the suspect.
On May 20, it was reported that the Slovak Prime Minister is recovering slightly. He is out of danger, but not stable enough to be transferred to another hospital.
“He is improving clinically, he is communicating and his inflammation is gradually decreasing,” read a statement from the hospital where Fico has been admitted. The 59-year-old Prime Minister Fico has undergone two operations.
