USA wants more imports of Dutch milk powder after its own contamination

The United States temporarily wants to import much more milk powder, also from the Netherlands. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has relaxed the current import rules because US production has largely come to a standstill.

The background to the shortages of baby milk powder is the shutdown of the factory of Abbott, the largest manufacturer of baby food in the US. The manufacturer shut down several product lines after four babies became ill and two died, possibly from bacterial contamination. Production at one of the company's factories in Michigan has come to a complete standstill for the time being.

FDA chief Robert Califf said he hoped this call to the global market would be heard and dairies seize the opportunity to expand supplies.

The US food authorities say they have now reached an agreement with the manufacturer on precautions to reopen the factory. The company said it will be several weeks before the baby milk can be returned to retailers .

Due to the shortage of powdered milk for infants, US President Joe Biden recently intervened and instructed the government to ensure the availability of infant milk. According to the FDA, this usually succeeds with about 98 percent. Until now, imports have mainly come from trading partners in Mexico, Ireland and the Netherlands.
