If the European Union does not take immediate action, the climate targets for 2030 will not be met. This is stated by the European Environment Agency in a report on the environment in Europe. The EEA urges the EU to act to tackle biodiversity loss, the effects of climate change, and the excessive use of natural resources.
According to the report, there is good reason to be hopeful, partly due to growing public awareness of the need for a sustainable future. Furthermore, the report highlights seven areas of focus for measures, including promoting sustainable innovations and leveraging the EU's economic and diplomatic influence for international agreements.
The report is published every five years by the European Environment Agency and provides scientifically grounded insights on how to respond to complex challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and air and water pollution.

In combating climate change, the question should also be asked whether the Netherlands should continue to be such a major exporter of meat and other agricultural products. Frans Timmermans, who as Vice-President of the European Commission is tasked with establishing a ‘Green Deal,’ pointed to the negative environmental impacts of the agricultural sector. He called the nitrogen situation in the Netherlands "acute," but also acknowledged that the sector is undergoing "substantial changes."
There is no time to waste in taking measures, even if they are painful and complex, said Timmermans. The "real transformation" of the economy and society requires at least several hundred billion euros annually in investments, for example in hydrogen and batteries, Timmermans said. According to him, the money for a "system change" is available. With inactivity, costs will be much higher and Europe will miss out on the economic benefits and opportunities that the transition to climate neutrality also offers.
Regarding fears that the changes might harm employment and industry, Timmermans pointed to a ‘social justice’ fund of at least 100 billion euros announced by the European Commission. Climate change is a direct threat to our existence, Timmermans warned. He will present his first plans next week.
