EU Commissioners Virginius (Environment) and Wojciechowski (Agriculture) will announce this on Monday at the monthly LNV ministers' meeting in Brussels.
The announced relaxations are included in an unofficial note that has been sent in recent days to the 27 LNV ministers. They will discuss the original pesticide proposal on Monday to reduce fertilizer use by 20 percent within a few years, and even cut chemicals in half. It was already known that not only politicians in the European Parliament but also many EU ministers opposed it.
The leaked unofficial communication to the ministers has caused discontent in the Agriculture Committee of the European Parliament because the EU Commissioners are making last-minute concessions to the ministers without first consulting EU politicians.
It has also become clear again that the Members of the AGRI agriculture committee and the ENVI environment committee in the European Parliament remain hopelessly divided over the new pesticide regulation. The proposed measures fall under the authority of the Environment Committee, to the great dissatisfaction of their Agriculture colleagues.
These two committees have not managed to reach agreement on the division of powers for several weeks. After several mediation meetings and many letters, the dossier will eventually be placed in the hands of the European Parliament President, Roberta Metsola.
