The heads of government of the EU countries are holding an EU summit this weekend, followed by another one in two weeks. Among other things, the results of the European elections will be discussed. Conservative and right-wing parties have notably gained seats.
According to still provisional results, the Christian Democrats (EPP) gained a few seats, the Social Democrats (S&D) lost a few seats, and the Liberals (Renew) suffered significant losses. Together, the three governing parties in Strasbourg and Brussels still hold a majority.
Regarding the possible re-election of the Commission President, Weber considers it a good democratic tradition “that the candidate of the party of the election winner is nominated.” Von der Leyen is a German EPP Christian Democrat. Therefore, Weber expects support from Chancellor Olaf Scholz, “also as a representative of the Social Democrats,” and from President Emmanuel Macron as a Liberal.
Though the political center may be weakened by seat losses of other parties, “it is strong enough to keep Europe on course,” said Manfred Weber. Concerning support for Ukraine, Weber is convinced that the citizens of Europe will continue to back the current course of the European Union.
“The political center may be weakened by losses of other parties, but it is strong enough to keep Europe on course. We will talk with all democratic forces in Europe; of course, we are already in contact with Social Democrats and Liberals. We are open to discussions with everyone who wants to work constructively for Europe. It is now up to the European Council to propose a candidate,” Weber stated.
