The Uyghur Idris Hassan, who lives in Morocco, is being extradited to China. This was decided this week by the Moroccan Court of Cassation.
Dutch PvdA MEP Thijs Reuten has asked EU foreign policy chief Joseph Borrell to once again urge the Moroccan authorities not to extradite Idris. According to Reuten, he is in danger if he falls into Chinese hands.
Last week, Reuten, together with eleven MEPs from four political groups in the European Parliament, sent a letter to the EU Ambassador to Morocco asking to do everything possible in consultation with the Moroccan authorities to prevent extradition to China. Unfortunately, it became clear this week that he will nevertheless be extradited.
"The long arm of Beijing reaches far beyond China where Uyghurs are being intimidated. Requesting extradition through Interpol using a Red Notice is primarily intended to be able to apprehend internationally wanted criminals.
The manipulation by China of the wanted notices should make everyone alert. Additionally, there has recently been a controversial Chinese appointment at Interpol and I fear that pressure has also been exerted behind the scenes on Morocco," Reuten said in response to the extradition.
