The Kremlin reports that the talks will involve both the preparation of possible negotiations to resolve the conflict in Ukraine and a meeting between the presidents of Russia and the U.S.
In Europe, the meeting between the U.S. and Russia in Saudi Arabia is met with some hope but mainly with much skepticism. There are major doubts whether a quick deal between Trump and Putin can end the war and whether Ukrainian and European interests will be respected.
One thing is already clear: the United States, so far the greatest supporter of Ukraine, and Russia, the aggressor in this three-year-long war, are talking to each other again.
However, during the talks in Saudi Arabia, no representatives of Ukraine or Europeans will be at the negotiating table. Although Ukrainian President Zelensky is also expected in the Saudi capital Riyadh, he has already stated that he does not accept the discussions between Rubio and Lavrov about Ukraine. He emphasized that negotiations on a solution for the conflict can only take place with Ukraine.
The European Union stands behind Ukraine after U.S. President Donald Trump stunned his NATO allies late last week by opening direct peace talks with Russia on the already three-year-long Russian war against Ukraine. This was emphasized on Monday after an emergency European summit.
The EU urges the 27 member states to increase their own arms production, including anti-aircraft guns, missiles, and at least 1.5 million artillery shells, in view of Washington's changing stance towards Ukraine.
