According to EU statistics, the average milk price in the EU countries has fallen every month so far this year. Prior to that, it had risen for 23 consecutive months. In Finland, the price was 51.60 cents.
In the major dairy-producing countries of Europe, the price seems to be stabilizing. In the Netherlands, the price has been steady at 43.25 cents for three months. In Ireland, the price decline has slowed and the price is around 39 cents. Similarly, in Denmark and Germany, the decline has eased, with prices hovering around 42 cents per kilo for several months.
In December, the price was still above 60 cents in the Netherlands and Denmark, and almost 70 cents per kilo in Ireland. Compared to this, the price in Finland has remained very stable. Since December, the domestic average price has dropped by about four cents. Prices vary among dairy products.
The reason for the decrease in producer prices for milk lies in the prices of all dairy products. They are all now cheaper than a year ago.
At the beginning of August, the price of butter in the EU area averaged 4.58 euros per kilo. A year ago, in August, the price was more than seven euros according to EU statistics.
The price of skimmed milk powder has fallen by 1.45 euros to 2.31 euros per kilo over the past year. The price of whole milk powder has decreased by 1.49 euros to 3.41 euros per kilo.
Among cheeses, cheddar and edam have become more than one euro per kilo cheaper. Emmentaler is an exception; its price has risen by 12 cents to 6.09 euros per kilo in one year.
