Shortly after his election, Magyar traveled to Brussels to discuss European funds that have been suspended for some time. These funds are intended for Hungary, but are not being paid out yet. Brussels first wants guarantees that the new Hungarian government will indeed implement pro-European reforms.
Not the Same Mistake
Brussels does not want to make the same ‘mistake’ with the Hungarians as after the election of the pro-European prime minister Tusk in Poland. At that time, suspended millions were quickly paid out but a conservative president continued to oppose pro-European legislative adjustments.
Ukraine
European officials emphasized that steps are needed first before any money can be transferred. Concerns about the rule of law and corruption play an important role. Brussels also wants greater certainty about support for Ukraine, which Magyar has previously said he only wants to provide if Kyiv offers guarantees regarding the position of the Hungarian minority in that country.
Promotion
The Hungarian politician spoke in Brussels on Wednesday, among others, with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Both parties described the talks as constructive and positive in tone. According to various reports, Magyar wants to reach an agreement as soon as possible. He views the release of the funds as an important step for his country.
Billions
The amount under discussion is around 17 to 18 billion euros. This money remains blocked for the time being until European conditions are met. Magyar has indicated that he wants to use the money to implement changes and support the economy. In doing so, he is also trying to gain the trust of European partners.
A new meeting is already scheduled for the coming weeks. Both sides hope to take further steps towards a possible agreement then. Whether and when the money will actually be released remains uncertain for now.
