Romanian Minister of Agriculture Florin Barbu has announced that his country is working on plans to expand the pig industry. This initiative is primarily aimed at making Romania more self-sufficient in the meat industry. Barbu’s announcement comes at a time when the country is striving for greater independence and sustainability in the agricultural sector.
With the help of European funds, the Romanian government wants to significantly increase domestic pig farming. This project is part of a broader strategy to strengthen food sovereignty and reduce dependence on imported meat. Barbu emphasizes that this expansion will also create new jobs and stimulate economic growth in rural Romania.
In addition to expanding pig farming, investments will be made in modern technologies and infrastructure to improve productivity. This includes building new, modern pig barns, enhancing feed and health programs for the animals, and advanced processing facilities. These investments are intended to make the Romanian pig industry more competitive in the European market and ensure higher-quality products.
The responses from the Romanian agricultural sector have been predominantly positive. Many farmers see it as an opportunity to modernize and expand their operations. However, there are also concerns about the availability of European funds. Barbu has assured that financial support will be distributed timely and efficiently, with regular inspections to ensure that resources are used properly.
Besides expanding pig farming, Barbu has also announced other measures to support farmers. Subsidies are being granted for irrigation projects, and financial compensation is provided for losses due to the recent drought. Work is also underway on fuel cost subsidies, which will reduce operational expenses for farmers.
The pig industry expansion project is part of a larger plan to transform Romania’s agricultural sector. Minister Barbu has indicated that there are also plans to strengthen the poultry industry and increase agricultural productivity.
