With the help of European funds, the Romanian government wants to substantially increase domestic pig farming. This project is part of a broader strategy to strengthen food sovereignty and reduce dependence on imported meat. Barbu emphasizes that this expansion will also create new jobs and stimulate economic growth in rural Romania.
In addition to increasing pig farming, investments will be made in modern technologies and infrastructure to improve productivity. This includes the construction of new, modern pigsties, enhanced feed and health programs for the animals, and advanced processing facilities. These investments are intended to make the Romanian pig industry more competitive on the European market and ensure higher-quality products.
Reactions from Romania’s agricultural sector are largely positive. Many farmers see it as an opportunity to modernize and expand their operations. However, there are also concerns about the availability of European funds. Barbu has assured that financial support will be distributed timely and efficiently, with regular checks to ensure the resources are used properly.
Besides expanding pig farming, Barbu has also announced other measures to support farmers. Subsidies will be provided for irrigation projects, and financial compensation will be offered for losses caused by the recent drought. Additionally, subsidies for fuel costs are being developed to reduce operational expenses for farmers.
The pig industry expansion project is part of a larger plan to transform Romania’s agricultural sector. Minister Barbu has indicated that there are also plans to strengthen the poultry industry and increase agricultural productivity.
