However, he did not announce an election date, although he previously hinted at 'after the summer holidays.' Vučić also did not clarify whether he intends to hold only new presidential elections or also parliamentary ones. He did say that he wants to remain politically active, possibly as prime minister.
A Few Weeks
Vučić made his decision known during a large gathering of his supporters in Belgrade. Before thousands present, he declared that this was probably the last time he would address them as president. He said he would remain in office for only a few more weeks before submitting his resignation.
Protests
His announcement follows about one and a half years of persistent protests, largely led by students. The demonstrations began after the collapse of a roof at a train station in Novi Sad killed sixteen people. Since then, protesters have demanded early elections.
Promotion
Vučić is currently in his second and final term as president. According to Serbian election rules, he cannot run for the presidency again. His current term would normally end next year.
Dominant
During his speech, Vučić emphasized that after his departure he would be involved in the election campaign of his political movement. He expressed confidence that his political camp would achieve a broad victory again.
The president has been the dominant political figure in Serbia for about twelve years. During that time, he has been prime minister and president in succession. His announced departure therefore represents a significant shift in the country’s political landscape.
