The Parliament has approved plans to reduce or abolish import tariffs on American industrial products. This aims to facilitate trade between the two economies. At the same time, EU politicians want to prevent the European market from becoming vulnerable to unilateral American actions.
Therefore, it has been established that the benefits of the agreement will only fully come into effect if the United States fulfill their part of the deal. Without concrete countermeasures from Washington, the European concessions will remain limited.
Greenland
An important part of the conditions is a suspension clause. This allows the European Union to temporarily halt the agreement if the American government does not adhere to the conditions or exerts renewed pressure on EU countries. This condition is a consequence of the previous American threat against Denmark, as Washington wants to seize Greenland.
Promotion
The level of American import tariffs also plays a major role. Especially tariffs on steel and related products must remain within agreed limits before the European measures take full effect.
Temporary
It has also been agreed that the arrangement has a temporary character. The agreement includes an end date in March 2028, after which a decision must be made again on whether an extension is desired.
Although there is broad support in Parliament, there is also criticism. Some parliamentarians believe the terms are too favorable for the United States and consider that Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has made too many concessions to Trump.
Interim step
The vote does not count as definitive implementation. The decision forms the next step in a longer process of EU decision-making, in which negotiations with the EU countries and the European Commission about a common European position are still ongoing.
Meanwhile, pressure is increasing from the United States to finalize the agreement quickly. American representatives emphasize that further delay could be economically detrimental and advocate for rapid approval.
