Zelensky recently expressed his dissatisfaction with Scholz's reluctance to supply German long-range cruise missiles to Ukraine, a matter that has been testing diplomatic relations within NATO for some time. Tensions between Ukraine and Germany now threaten to escalate, partly due to Kiev’s urgent requests for advanced weapons.
Scholz is hesitant to provide the Taurus cruise missiles because these weapons pose a potential risk of escalation. Germany fears that their use would further provoke Russia, given the long range and precision of these German cruise missiles. Scholz has even included his refusal in the election program of his SPD party.
Zelensky responded with frustration to Scholz's rejection and openly criticized the German position. According to him, this caution hinders Ukraine's efforts to effectively defend itself against ongoing Russian aggression. He also suggested that Germany may not be doing enough to support Ukrainian interests, which has led to tensions within NATO.
According to Rutte, Zelensky’s criticism of Scholz is unfounded and counterproductive. The Dutch NATO chief pointed out that Germany has provided significant support, both financially and militarily, since the start of the Russian invasion. He emphasized that such assistance deserves recognition rather than public criticism. "Germany is a crucial ally, and we must respect their contributions," Rutte said.
Mark Rutte, who previously served as Prime Minister of the Netherlands, has spoken emphatically in favor of unity within the alliance. He indicated that, as NATO chief, he would be willing to supply cruise missiles without restrictions if he were in Scholz’s position. At the same time, he stressed that the final decisions about military aid rest with each country individually and that public divisions can undermine the joint efforts against Russia.
Rutte’s remarks highlight the broader challenges NATO faces in maintaining solidarity amid a complex geopolitical situation. While some member states, such as Poland and the Baltic countries, push for maximum support to Ukraine, others adopt a more cautious approach to avoid further escalation.
