The Dutch ban applies to the import, purchase, and sale of goods from Israeli settlements in the West Bank and the occupied Golan Heights. The provision of services that enable this trade is also covered by the new sanctions. Attempts to circumvent the measures are likewise prohibited.
The Hague initially aimed for a joint European import ban. However, there was insufficient support for this within the European Union. Several EU countries remain hesitant, meaning a joint European approach is not forthcoming for the time being.
Unlawful
The Netherlands joins Ireland, Belgium, and Spain with the measure, which have also imposed restrictions on trade in products from Israeli settlements. At the same time, calls from various countries continue for a joint European regulation to be established.
Promotion
According to the Dutch government, the measure is intended to prevent the Netherlands from economically contributing to a situation that is considered unlawful under international law. The cabinet aims to fulfill its international obligations with this.
The products covered by the ban include agricultural items such as avocados, dates, oranges, grapes, and fresh herbs. Wine from the occupied Golan Heights is also subject to the new trade restrictions.
Not indirectly either
The sanctions apply not only to imports into the Netherlands but also to Dutch companies trading from abroad. Additionally, mediation and other commercial services that support Israeli trade are prohibited. The measures are intended to last for an initial period of three years.
According to a report by the non-governmental organization Global Echo, the Netherlands accounted for about one-third of the agricultural exports from the Israeli settlements and nearly half of their total exports to the European Union.
Destruction
Tensions in the occupied West Bank escalated further this weekend. Israeli settlers set fire to two mosques and cars and caused damage in several villages. In Qusra, a mosque under construction was reportedly damaged and vandalized with graffiti.
