The Turkish opposition party CHP is once again under heavy pressure. Arrests, legal proceedings, and a controversial leadership struggle have led to new tensions between the pro-European opposition and the Islamist AKP government.
In various parts of the country, CHP politicians, local officials, and party members have become subjects of investigations, arrests, or trials. These developments have further increased unrest within the largest opposition party. CHP members do not support the return of the ousted chairman (by order of the court). European politicians have warned Ankara that the opposition must not be silenced.
Party Leadership
At the same time, international criticism has emerged regarding the treatment of the opposition. There are warnings that political opponents must not be silenced through courts, coercive measures, or other forms of pressure.
Promotion
Meanwhile, the party is trying to find a way out of the leadership crisis that arose following a judicial decision about the party leadership. Within the CHP, calls are growing for a new party congress to be organized quickly so members can express their opinions again on the party leadership.
Challenger
Despite internal problems, the CHP continues to position itself as the main challenger to President Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan and his AKP. The party is attempting to shift the focus from internal struggles to the political developments in the country.
The tensions were once again evident on Saturday during protest rallies where many opposition supporters took to the streets. Demonstrators expressed their support for the party leadership that has come under pressure due to judicial interventions.
