U.S. President Joe Biden called Russia's decision to cancel the grain deal with Ukraine "outrageous." There was no reason to do so, Biden said.
Moscow announced on Saturday its withdrawal from the agreement in response to a drone attack on Russian ships at Black Sea ports in Crimea.
The grain deal between Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, and the United Nations was reached in July after lengthy negotiations. Its aim was to enable millions of tons of grain stuck in Ukrainian ports to be exported, thereby alleviating shortages on the global market. The agreement is considered vital for the food supply of the poorest countries.
Due to the renewed blockade, Ukrainian President Zelensky has called for Russia to be excluded from the G20. Poor countries may suffer from a worsening food crisis deliberately caused by Russia, Zelensky said.
The next G20 summit will take place in mid-November on the island of Bali in Indonesia. According to the Kremlin, it has not yet been decided whether Russian President Vladimir Putin will participate.
Russia justified its withdrawal from the agreement by referring to drone attacks on ships of the Black Sea Fleet in Sevastopol on Saturday, blaming Ukraine. Moscow described it as an act of terrorism.
