President Zelensky announced that Ukraine would no longer refrain from attacking Russian oil facilities. Kyiv had paused these attacks for three days to accommodate Trump, who fears that damaging refineries would further drive up international fuel prices.
Trump called the resumed Ukrainian attacks a disgrace. Zelensky defended his decision by pointing out that Russia continues to bomb Ukrainian cities and energy infrastructure. The ongoing attacks threaten electricity supply, heating, and water availability, as Ukraine prepares for winter.
Starlink
Ukrainian military communications are also under pressure. The Ukrainian army uses the U.S. satellite system Starlink for (drone) connections on the battlefield. Recent disruptions have raised questions about dependence on American technology. SpaceX denies responsibility for the disturbances. A U.S. official denies Trump’s involvement.

Additionally, Polish authorities are investigating a suspected sabotage attempt against a Starlink installation in Poland. Two Turkish suspects were arrested in Germany. Investigations are ongoing to determine whether they have links to a criminal organization possibly acting on behalf of Russian intelligence services.
Airfields Closed
Meanwhile, Ukrainian drone attacks are causing serious disruptions to Russian air traffic. At Moscow’s airports, restrictions have been imposed for six consecutive nights. In St. Petersburg, planes also had to remain grounded. Russian authorities report that large numbers of Ukrainian drones have been intercepted.
While Ukraine steps up military pressure, Trump has suspended new economic sanctions against Russia. As a result, new penalties against major buyers of Russian oil and gas are currently on hold. Trump has also reached agreements with Putin for the resumption of Russian diesel supplies.

Washington aims with this to lower high fuel prices, which have also risen due to the war with Iran. These prices pose a political problem ahead of the U.S. congressional elections on November 3.
European leaders favor continuing sanctions and providing more support to Ukraine. Zelensky is requesting an additional 70 billion euros for next year. Talks are also being held again about using frozen Russian assets, but Belgium remains opposed due to possible financial and legal consequences.
