President Zelensky says he will observe an indefinite ceasefire starting Wednesday if Russia also adheres to it. If the Russians continue their attacks on Ukrainian civilian targets, Zelensky sees no reason to allow the Russians to have their own Liberation Day celebration.
In recent days, Ukrainians have managed to attack targets deep in Moscow, such as the large television tower in the city center. Some commentators are already calling this 'a rehearsal for May 9.'
Counterproposal
Moscow announced a two-day ceasefire for May 8 and 9, around the annual commemoration of victory in World War II. According to Russian authorities, this gesture is meant to allow for peace during the celebrations.
Promotion
Ukraine responded almost immediately with its own proposal. The two announcements are unrelated and not coordinated. There are no joint agreements, making the chance of actual calm on the battlefield uncertain.
'Leave the City'
Tensions further escalate with harsh warnings from Moscow. Russia threatens heavy retaliatory strikes on Kyiv if Ukraine disrupts the commemorations around May 9. The civilian population of Kyiv has also been urged to leave the city.
President Volodymyr Zelensky calls it unserious to link a ceasefire to a national celebration while fighting continues. Moreover, he says no clear agreements or official proposals have been received.
No Equipment
The situation unfolds against the backdrop of nearly halted diplomatic efforts. Attempts to reach a broader solution to the conflict appear to be receiving less priority at the moment.
It was previously revealed that Putin has decided against having heavy military equipment participate in the parade on Red Square. There are also unconfirmed reports that Putin, possibly out of fear of an attack, has been wearing a bulletproof vest in recent days.
