Due to Russia's war against Ukraine, this year the export of Ukrainian eggs has almost been halved. Since the beginning of 2022, Ukraine has exported 228 million eggs. That is 42 percent less than in the same period last year, according to the Ukrainian Poultry Association.
Ukrainian eggs are mainly exported to Europe, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and Israel. In 2021, egg production already dropped by 25 percent, mainly due to expensive feed, gas, and electricity, but also because of the Russian destruction of large poultry farms and storage warehouses.
Since the start of the war, the Ukrainian Poultry Association has reported that several poultry farms have been damaged or destroyed. On March 19, a poultry farm in the Dnipro region was destroyed by a Russian missile strike. On May 13, it was reported that the country’s largest poultry farm, Chornobayivska, had been destroyed.
A large poultry company reported that due to the war, it was unable to feed the birds or transport workers to the farm because it is located in territory controlled by Russia. More than four million adult chickens and 700,000 chicks at that farm died of starvation.
Overall, the Ukrainian egg industry has suffered losses of nearly 51 million dollars as a result of the war. Due to the blockade of Ukrainian ports, egg exports were halted for several months. Exports have now gradually resumed, with eggs being transported via Poland and Romania. However, volumes remain significantly lower than those transported before the war.
