The European Parliament has voiced support for a faster enlargement process. In various political discussions within the European Union, it is emphasized that admitting new member states is a crucial strategic choice for the bloc's future.
Ukraine and Moldova are frequently mentioned as countries already far along in the process and for which further negotiation steps are expected. Both countries are literally and figuratively within the range of Russian fire.
Strengthening
Proponents of swift admission argue that incorporating new member states is not only a political decision but also a matter of security and stability in Europe. Enlargement is seen as a way to further strengthen the European cooperation project.
Promotion
According to several EU politicians, postponing may ultimately prove more costly than admitting new members. They warn that prolonged uncertainty around candidate countries could increase geopolitical tensions.
Phased
At the same time, there is not yet full agreement within the European Union on the pace of enlargement. Some EU countries advocate rapid progress, while others prefer a more cautious approach. Currently, Hungary and Slovakia are refusing any rapprochement for Ukraine.
Diplomatic preparatory talks in Brussels also discuss various models for enlargement. This includes how candidate countries can be brought step by step closer to the European Union.
The enlargement debate will remain central in the coming period. European leaders can further discuss the next steps in the EU enlargement process during their meeting on March 19.
