The action took place on the open sea, in international waters off the coast of Greece and around the island of Crete. The fleet consisted of more than twenty boats and was part of a larger group sailing together toward Gaza.
According to Israeli authorities, approximately 175 activists were detained. After interception and detention, they were transferred to Israel. The organizers of the protest fleet say the action was intended to break the Gaza naval blockade and to bring aid supplies to the area.
Piracy
They claim the interception took place in international waters and describe it as a violation of international law. They use terms such as “piracy” and “kidnapping.”
Promotion
Israel offers a different version of events. According to the authorities, intervention was necessary to maintain the blockade and to prevent a potential escalation. The operation reportedly proceeded without casualties.
During the interception, communication between the ships was reportedly disrupted. Activists reported losing contact with other boats at the moment the Israeli military operation against them began. Ships were said to have been brought under control one by one.
Not the First Time
This event is not isolated. Israel has previously blocked similar attempts to reach Gaza by sea. On those occasions, ships were also intercepted and crew members detained.
The action is once again causing tensions around the Gaza blockade, which has long been the subject of international debate. Activists view the fleet as an attempt to provide aid and raise awareness, while Israel insists on the importance of maintaining the blockade.
