The measure came after an inspection revealed irregularities in the documentation of work performed on critical engine components. The problems were uncovered during a routine check. KLM has reported the matter to the Dutch aviation authority and manufacturer Boeing.
The errors identified relate to the engine attachments. Internal investigation shows that the assembly on seven aircraft was not done according to regulations. So far, no incidents during flights have been reported.
The decision to temporarily take the aircraft out of service was made out of precaution. Efforts are underway to carry out a rapid repair. Only after a full re-inspection and approval may the planes fly again.

Due to the unavailability of these aircraft, KLM had to cancel several intercontinental flights. Flights to Shanghai and Los Angeles were particularly affected. Passengers on the canceled flights were offered alternative travel options. The airline refers to the situation as force majeure.
The technical problems arose following maintenance work conducted in collaboration with an external partner. The identity of this partner has not been disclosed.
Boeing has been informed of the situation. According to KLM, the aircraft manufacturer is cooperating on the solution. It remains unknown when the Dreamliners will be back in service.
